Eugene Leung is a PhD student at SOAS, supported by the ERC/UKRI project “Maqām Beyond Nation” scholarship. He is working on a thesis focusing on aspects of modal creativity in the Tajik-Uzbek maqom traditions. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge followed by a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology from Goldsmiths, University of London. He has been a Research Associate at the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as well as a part-time lecturer at the Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Eugene performs on the Uzbek dutar and Arabic oud, and has been involved with many outreach projects and concerts as a curator and as a performer for maqam-based music and world music in Hong Kong.
