Displacement and Remembrance: mediated listening among exile Uyghur Sufis

Abstract:

This article engages with the notion of «amplified liturgies» through a focus on migrant practices of mediated listening among displaced Uyghur Naqshbandi Sufi followers. Cut off from family and community in the homeland, they maintain connections with other exiled followers by sharing videos of past religious gatherings via social media. The article explores the relationships between mediated listening, the spatialities and temporalities of displacement, and affective, embodied experiences of faith, drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the habitual body to think through sedimented memory and the mediated experience of religious community and divine presence. It argues that their engagement with «amplified liturgies» and their practices of remembering zikr in exile, sustain embodied memories which offer hope against colonial dispossession.
