In a vibrant musical showcase, the SOAS Middle East Ensemble performed in the “Acoustic Evening” held on March 15th at SOAS. This event serves as an opportunity for SOAS Music students to showcase their musical skills and accomplishments gained over the academic year.
Comprising some ten students from diverse musical backgrounds (both undergraduate and postgraduate) the ME Ensemble embodies a collective eagerness to learn about musical cultures within the realm of maqam. The ensemble has warmly welcomed performers and enthusiasts of maqam music from outside the institution, fostering an inclusive environment of musical exchange and collaboration.

SOAS Middle East Ensemble Rehearsal, SOAS Music Department, March 2024
Part of the impact-related endeavours of Maqam Beyond Nation, the SOAS Middle East Ensemble will continue to be sponsored by the project over the course of its five-year running to enhance the education and dissemination of maqam-based music traditions both within the Music Department and beyond.
Under the guidance of Dr. Saeid Kordmafi, the ensemble convenes weekly throughout the academic year in the Music Department, working on a diverse repertoire that brings together Persian, Arab, and Turkish classical traditions. Additionally, the ensemble has had the privilege of benefiting from the expertise of guest leaders such as Pouyan Biglar and Baha Yetkin, esteemed musicians in Persian and Turkish classical music, respectively.
